Born in Akron, Ohio, of Polish Jewish immigrant parents, he was raised in Canton where he joined his father's scrap-metal business. Over the years the business expanded into a multi-state corporation. He married Fanny Teplansky in 1916, and in 1940 they moved to Cleveland. Luntz served as president of the Temple-Tifereth Israel in Cleveland from 1950-1960, and supported a wide assortment of civic, cultural, medical, religious, and benevolent groups in Canton and in Cleveland. The collection consists of newspaper clippings, correspondence, and family documents pertaining to Abe M. Luntz and his sons, Robert and William, who were also involved in numerous service organizations. Luntz (1893-1981) was born in Akron, Ohio, on March 6, 1893 of Polish Jewish immigrant parents, Samuel and Rebecca Wolf Luntz. He and his family moved to Canton, Ohio, when he was around 6 years old. He attended public schools in Canton, was very active in sports, and graduated from Canton's Central High School in 1913. After graduation, he went to work for his father's company, the Canton Iron and Metal Company. With his brother Darwin, he founded the Luntz Iron and Steel Company in 1916 due to the growing need for scrap with the onset of World War I. He held several positions in the Luntz Iron and Steel Company before becoming president in 1951. The company became one of the United States' premiere scrap and steel brokerage firms and expanded into Michigan, Pennsylvania, Indiana, and Kentucky. He was the son of Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver, who preceded and served with him at The Temple. Prior to his years at The Temple, Daniel Jeremy Silver was rabbi at Congregation Beth Torah of Chicago Heights, Illinois. He became senior Rabbi of The Temple in 1963, serving until his death. He was active in local Cleveland Jewish and secular affairs, particularly with Case Western Reserve University, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Jewish Community Federation's Public Welfare Committee. He was a partner until his retirement in 1973. He was active in the Cleveland Bar Association and the Cleveland Law Library Association. As a sportsman he was an active sailor, participating in races at the Mentor Harbor Yachting Club. The congregation was founded in 1850 after several members of Anshe Chesed, Cleveland's first congregation, left that congregation as the result of a dispute over religious ritual. After implementing religious reforms in the service and hiring a dedicated rabbi for the congregation, Tifereth Israel eventually built the first synagogue for the congregation in 1855 at Huron and Miami Streets. In 1894 the congregation moved to Willson Avenue in the Woodland neighborhood and then to Wade Park on East 105th Street in 1924. The congregation dedicated The Temple Branch in Beachwood in 1969. In 2010 it was announced that the East 105th Street building would be renovated by Case Western Reserve University for use as a performing arts center.
